PS3 Firmware 1.82 Coming Soon

Posted by Aaron on Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Eric Lempel Director of PlayStation Network Operations has posted at the Official Playstation blog that PS3 Firmware 1.82 update will be released in the next few days.

Here is the post:

Hey everyone, you told us you wanted to hear about updates a few days in advance, so here’s a quick heads up that we have a PS3 firmware update in the works. Scheduled for release in the next few days, firmware 1.82 is an update that enables the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. As most of you know, these are high quality files that you’ll now be able to play on your PS3. Hopefully this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility. I’ll chime in here quickly with an update once the firmware is live and ready. Thanks for all of your support and feedback, keep it coming!

Sweet! I love firmware updates 🙂

New PSP Slim/Phone Rumor Debunked By Sony

Posted by Aaron on Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Less than 24 hours of opening up the official SCEA Playstation.Blog John Koller Sr. Marketing Manager, PSP has debunked the PSP Slim and PSP Phone rumors. Here is what he had to say:

The rumor mill is flowing about new PSP hardware and a PSP phone, and I just wanted to take the time to clear the air. We haven’t announced anything about a new PSP, much less one that would have any phone capabilities. As SCEA’s resident PSP guru, I’m thrilled to hear that there’s so much interest in the platform, but sorry folks, these reports floating around fall into the rumors/speculation category.

Oh well thats sucks. Personally I don’t think the PSP needs a redesign. It’s fine as it is. It just needs more awesome games and PS Network integration. 🙂

SCEA opens up Official Playstation.Blog

Posted by Aaron on Tuesday, June 12, 2007

After years of Playstation fans and various gaming sites calling on Sony to start up a official blog yesterday SCEA opened up the official Playstation.Blog. Here is a little tid bit from their welcome post:

It’s with enthusiasm, eagerness and, honestly, a little bit of relief that we lift the cover on our first official Sony Computer Entertainment America company blog – welcome and sorry for the wait.

PlayStation.Blog is a bit of work in progress, we see it as a place where we can share with you our company’s collective insights, opinions and perspectives on all things related to SCEA, PlayStation and the industry we play in.

At the moment, we’re thinking about sharing all sorts of things here, ranging from product news and title announcements to developer updates and industry opinion posts – all of which will come straight from the people here inside SCEA who are working, thinking and playing with this stuff every day. Look to the categories on the sidebar for some initial thoughts we have on future post themes.

Personally I am excited to see Sony starting up a official blog. The blog looks slick and I can’t wait to see what else they have in store 🙂 Nice job guys! 😀

Redesigned PSP Coming Soon?

Posted by Jay on Friday, June 8, 2007

Kotaku has posted some interesting info on a redesigned PSP, supposedly hitting shelves this August or September. It will be unveiled at E3, and will feature a slimmer design, better battery life, 8 GB flash memory, revamped buttons, and hopefully be priced at under $170. Rumor for now, but if it’s true, I’m picking up one of these!

Back in March, we brought word of a new and improved PlayStation Portable. But what good are the rumblings of new hardware without some of the details? Today, thanks to several sources close to Sony, we bring you that nitty gritty as the redesigned Playstation Portable nears completion.

Keep in mind this isn’t Playstation Portable 2, but rather a redesign of the original, so it will be sporting the same internal hardware. But that’s about the only thing that hasn’t changed. The new Playstation Portable will have a much slimmer design, thanks mostly to a new LED screen that will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up far less space. That LED also helps pump up the battery life of this sexy new model, which can last as much as four times longer than the original PSP. While the new PSP still makes use of the UMD drive, it will be a faster version and to help speed up loadtimes and gameplay, the portable will come packed with 8GBs of internal flash memory. Finally, the PSP’s much maligned buttons have been revamped and the D-Pad has gotten a major overhaul, giving portable gamers something more like a Playstation 3 D-pad to play with.

The company is still trying to decide whether or not they want to include a built-in camera, as they weigh whether the cost of adding the device will be worth the benefit to gamers. Our money is on no camera because of the competitive price issues. Those of you holding out for a touchscreen are, unfortunately, going to have to wait, though word has it that it will most like make an appearance in Sony’s next portable gaming device. While the new PSP will remain black, Sony is still trying to decide whether it will have a glossy or matte finish.

The final price for this new PSP hasn’t been set, but Sony is hoping to sell it for under $170 or so. Manufacturing should commence in the upcoming weeks, and the product is going to be officially unveiled at this year’s E3. The sale date being tossed around is August, but don’t be surprised if it’s pushed back to September. What’s this reworked PSP called? It doesn’t have a name as of yet, but may we suggest “PSP Slim”?

Play the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo get stuff in the final version

Posted by Aaron on Monday, June 4, 2007

Man Team Ninja and Tecmo are awesome! Not only are they giving PS3 owners an awesome version of Ninja Gaiden but they are doing something that will make the final version of the game last even more. All you need to do is download and play the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo from the Playstation Store and when you get the retail version of Ninja Gaiden Sigma and it will detect how much of the demo you have played and it will reward you with Yellow Essence. Yellow Essence is the in-game form of currency that can be used to purchase items and power-ups for your weapons. So get downloading the demo(if you haven’t already. If you haven’t then shame on you lol 😛 ) and starting playing the Ninjas out of it!

Resistance DLC Delayed till 6/7/2007

Posted by Aaron on Monday, June 4, 2007

According to CVG the Resistance Map Pack DLC & Patch have been delayed till June 7th. Here is what SCEA’s Greg Phillips had to say about it:

“The map pack has completed the approval process, and the content update is in the final day of testing worldwide.

“The DLC, itself, is on track and ready to go as promised by Insomniac back in March,” he confesses. “The reason for the delay is we (SCEA) needed a little extra time to get the global servers locked in and ready for thousands of players to come knocking. We would rather have a short delay and continue to deliver on our over the top, online experience.”

[Source]

It’s only three more days away it’s not that bad of a delay. I can’t wait! 🙂
