Microsoft: no evidence of any compromise of the security of the Xbox Live Network

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

From Major Nelson’s Blog:

Despite some recent reports and speculation, I want to reassure all of our 6 million Xbox Live members that we have looked into the situation and found no evidence of any compromise of the security of the Xbox Live Network or Bungie.net. There have been a few isolated incidents where malicious users have been attempting to draw personal information from unsuspecting users and use it to gain access to their LIVE account. This is a good time to remind our members that they should never give out any of their personal information. Additionally it may be a good idea to download this free PDF file from Microsoft.com ‘ Help Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft’ that gives you some excellent information and tips on how to protect yourself.

Hope that clears things up.

God of War not over with God of War 3?

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

In an interview with GameDaily.biz David Jaffe he explains that it could take another 2 or 3 games to finish the story of God of War. HEre is a sample of the interview:

GameDaily BIZ: So I’m surprised to see you here at a Nintendo event.

David Jaffe: Well I’m with a buddy of mine and she had an invite, and she said, “Hey you wanna go to the Nintendo party?” and I’ve never met Miyamoto before, and maybe he’ll be here, but I don’t know… I love Nintendo. I can’t get my hands on a f***ing Wii. I go to my GameStop every couple mornings, and they’re like, “No, sorry!”

BIZ: [Nintendo of America president] Reggie [Fils-Aime] is right over there; why don’t you go ask him for one?

Jaffe: I don’t know, it’s not like he’s carrying them around like Santa Claus… but I’m grateful to be here. It’s pretty exciting.

BIZ: Let’s talk a bit about PlayStation Home and LittleBigPlanet. You’ve probably known about this for months or longer, right?

Jaffe: I have known about Home for quite a while, even before it was called Home, and it certainly has come a long way. It’s very, very exciting. It makes me real proud to be a Sony employee. I think the fans have responded in an incredibly, overwhelmingly positive way, so I think we’re on to something. I’m proud to be part of a company that’s doing something so cool.

BIZ: And how long has that been in development?

Jaffe: I can’t say, both because I’m not allowed to and I’m not entirely sure. You hear about things in hallways and meetings, but I don’t know where the original idea came from or how long it’s been. [Note: it's since been revealed that Sony was at one point working on Home for PS2, so it's been in the works for many years – Ed.]

BIZ: People have been saying, “Where’s Sony’s answer to Xbox Live?” Do you view this as the answer?

Jaffe: You know, I think Phil Harrison’s a guy who believes in and pushes innovation, and this is me guessing—I haven’t talked to Phil and the guys in England who came up with this—but my guess would be that this came out of a place of pure passion and excitement for something they’ve been really excited about, and that passion seems to be translating to gamers. So I don’t think Sony really works that way in terms of, “This company is doing this, so let’s counter with this…” I just think we’re all kind of following Phil’s vision for innovation and cool stuff. And this is just another thing in a long line that fits that bill.

BIZ: I met with Chris Satchell and Aaron Greenberg over at Microsoft [Stay tuned for that interview, folks! – Ed.], and they thought the idea for Home is interesting but that gamers would get tired of walking around a virtual world just to view trailers or interact with others. On Xbox Live you can do these things without using the virtual world as a means to an end. How do you respond to that?

Jaffe: Well, what do you want them to say? They’re the competition, and they’re clearly having to respond to some news they weren’t expecting that I think does make it very clear, and one of the many things that’ll make it clear, the significant difference between what we offer the consumer and what they offer the consumer. So I think it’s a good attempt at spin. Good for them for trying to spin their way out of a pretty bad situation.

BIZ: I think LittleBigPlanet basically stunned everybody. The audience erupted in cheers. Are we going to be seeing more and more of this user-generated content focus from Sony?

Jaffe: I can’t really answer that, but Phil’s a big proponent of innovation and new stuff and everything that you heard him say at the keynote yesterday is stuff he’s been saying since he took over a year and a half or two years ago. I think the man puts his mind where his mouth is, and he puts his energy and the teams’ energies behind what they believe in and he believes in. I’m not in any position to speak to what’s coming down the line, other than to say it’s exciting stuff… and it’s an exciting time to be at Sony right now.

BIZ: I know nothing’s been announced yet regarding rumble, but what’s your reaction to Sony settling with Immersion? I found it a bit funny because back at D.I.C.E. Phil Harrison had just told me that it’s a “last generation” feature. So what do you think about bringing rumble back to PS3?

Jaffe: I can’t tell you if it’s going to happen because: (a) I wouldn’t be allowed to; and (b) I don’t know.

BIZ: Right, but as a designer, just speaking in general, do you feel that it’s important?

Jaffe: In general… important, no. It’s one of a number of small things that helps add to the enjoyment of a game. I don’t think having it not be there is anything close to being a deal breaker for me as a designer or player. It’s a nice thing to have, but it isn’t like anything close to being ultra cool and important.

BIZ: I think you’d have to agree though, if we’re playing God of War or God of War II and we took the rumble out, that simply wouldn’t be as good an experience, right?

Jaffe: I definitely think it adds to the experience but what I don’t necessarily agree with when you look at the fan boards and things like that is how much it adds [to the experience]. Sure it’s nice. No one would say, “Yeah rumble sucks, nobody cares about it.” It’s a nice feature… but let’s put it this way: when I heard we weren’t going to have rumble I wasn’t like, “Oh my god we’re f***ed.”

Calling All Cars coming mid-April

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

David Jaffe was right. On Insomniac Games latest podcast David Jaffe mentioned Calling All Cars might be coming out in April because they were still doing some testing on the game. IGN PS3 has got the details:

Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit later than we’d hoped. Calling All Cars won’t be making its way to the PSN in March; instead, the EDI title will be released in mid-April. No official statement was available from Sony as to the new date for the game.

New in game buddy list coming for MotorStorm

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

This Friday March 23rd(just in time for the European launch of the PS3) Sony will release a patch for MotorStorm that will add a in game buddy list. Here are the details from IGN PS3:

The list itself will be available as a downloadable patch that’s activated automatically when users log in (followed by a quick reboot). Once installed, the update will add a “Buddies” line to the boot screen located underneath the “Play” icon. Your online friends and their current status will be viewable from this hub, and if your friends are online, they can be directly linked through the MotorStorm list.

Sony has also confirmed that the Buddy List has a built-in filter that prevents people from infiltrating a set game list — users will need to be connected to a buddy to get in.

Xbox Live Accounts Compromised?

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Various reports have surfaced in recent weeks of Xbox Live accounts being hijacked and Gamertag IDs being stolen. Some users have taken to collecting their own examples of fraudulent activity. It’s not known if Xbox Live’s security has been breached or if there is a more mundane explanation for the mystery.

A spokesman for the company told CNet, “Recently, there have been reports of fraudulent activity and account theft taking place on the Xbox Live network. Security is a top priority for Xbox Live, and we are actively investigating all reports of fraudulent behavior and theft.”

This is not good news for the people that had their accounts hacked :(

Phil Harrison on HOME,LittleBigPlanet,Second Life & porn Oh My!

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Three Speech has put up a interview they did with Phil Harrison a day after his GDC keynote.

Q: Home looks great, but it begs a few questions. Presumably there will be moderation, at least in the public spaces?

PH: Exactly right. Public spaces will be moderated, and we’ll use the same rules of parental control as we do for the PlayStation Network, so parents can control whether people have access to the network or not. Then, in the private spaces, it’s unmoderated – exactly in the same way that you can send an e-mail to somebody with an attachment on it, or you could have a video chat with somebody.

Q: In terms of some of the actions you can do within the world, presumably there’s no adult content there?

PH: Well, it’s absolutely deliberate that there is no physical impact between characters, between avatars. We are going to have animations that will allow you to shake somebody’s hand or to have some social touch but in a very, you know, appropriate way. But no, we’re not going to have ‘those’ kind of animations that I’m imagining that you’re thinking about.

Q: What about uploading porn from your PS3’s hard-disk to your private space? And maybe inviting people you don’t necessarily know back and them being slightly offended by what they see, then going to a moderator?

PH: Well I’m disappointed that you would use those as the first questions. I think Home should be used for a much wider and more beneficial scope than that, but I think that people can express their creativity inside Home in a wide variety of ways and it’s not necessarily for us to dictate what that should be. However, if somebody feels uncomfortable about an encounter on Home, it’s very easy for them to ban that person from their friends list…

Q: In terms of the virtual cinema, you talked a lot about trailers, that kind of thing, will you be showing full films in there?

PH: No. The best place to show a film is running off the Cross Media Bar. But short clip content yes, user-created content definitely and possibly news and daily programming.

Q: But no TV shows?

PH: I wouldn’t say no TV shows, but I don’t think you would want to stand there for an hour watching a TV show when the best way is to watch it from the Cross Media Bar.

Q: But I assume that’ll be linked, if the film is available, on the online store, then there’ll be a one-click buy?

PH: That’s exactly the intention. You would be able to preview something in the preview theatre and then link to the store to be able to download it, exactly right.

Q: Regarding LittleBigPlanet, how much pre-made content will go out with it? And secondly, how important would a tutorial be, for example?

PH: We’re going to debut the product on the PlayStation Network first, as a commercial release, and then it’ll be on Blu-Ray disk in 2008 — hopefully early 2008 — and our goal is to be able to access some of the user-generated levels onto the disk when we sell it at retail. Maybe not the first version that we sell at retail, but future versions that we sell at retail can have user-aggregated content on them.

As far as a tutorial is concerned, I’m sure we’ll do something to make it easy for people to start off, but that’s also part of the interesting cross-over between Home and LittleBigPlanet; we could have a LittleBigPlanet space in Home where you can show expert user videos — imagine that in a classroom setting where you’ve got people sat down who are LittleBigPlanet designers and somebody going: “This is how you make boxes, this is how you make spheres, this is how you assign behaviors to them.” That’s really interesting.

Q: What’s the reward system going to be — what will you get if you make the number one played level?

PH: We’ve got some interesting ideas on that which we’ll share a little bit later, but we hope that star creators will be recognised and rewarded for their efforts.

Italian retailers break PlayStation 3’s March 23 release date

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

A statement from SCEE reads, “Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is deeply disappointed by the unilateral decision of some Italian retail chains to commence the sale of PS3 to consumers before this official launch date, and we will carefully consider all available options in relation to retailers who have commenced sale of PS3 prior to 23rd March 2007. Such decisions run counter to our policy of consumer protection which seeks to ensure that all of our consumers have an equal opportunity to purchase PS3.”

Breaking street dates is a time-honored tradition in the games industry. For example, last year in the US, Target and Wal-Mart allegedly broke the street date for the DS Lite more than a week prior to the June 11 launch.

Resistance Multiplayer Patch is live!

Posted by Aaron on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Insomniac Games and Sony Computer Entertainment America have released the second content update for Resistance: Fall of Man. This update features two new modes of play amongst a host of other changes.

New Gametypes
- Added Team Conversion
In Team Conversion your goal is to kill everyone on the other team before they kill your team. Players are given a limited number of lives as a human and Chimera. If your team has at least one player with at least one life when the other team is completely dead, your team wins. You become a spectator when you have lost all your lives.

In Team Conversion mode, you are scored by how long you survived and how many other players you killed, like in free-for-all Conversion. However, the win goes to the last team with one or more players alive.

- Added Assault
Both teams start with a few nodes and all of the base defenses from Breach. To win, destroy the enemy reactor. When you deactivate an enemy node, it becomes permanently neutral, and your opponents lose some base defenses. At the start of the match, both reactors are shielded (invulnerable), so you must deactivate at least one of the enemy nodes. Nodes do not regenerate health in Assault, but they take substantially more damage than in other modes.
